7 Foods That Make You Depressed

Depression is a disease that affects more than 350 million people worldwide in the twentieth century and is estimated to become the second leading cause of disability by 2020 only after cardiovascular diseases, says the World Health Organization (WHO).

Millions of people in the world suffer from depression.

This condition is manifested in mood swings, sadness, loss of interest or pleasure, feelings of guilt, lack of self-esteem, feeling tired, lack of concentration, as well as sleep or appetite disorders.

There are scientific studies that ensure that these foods cause addictive responses in the brain, the kinds caused by drugs and tobacco, because they contain flavorings, preservatives and additives with adverse health effects.

1. Artificial sweeteners

Experts in the United States have determined that all artificial sweeteners produce depression.

Similarly, Rachel Fiske, a certified nutrition consultant in San Francisco, says that aspartame slows production of serotonin and dopamine, which could be the cause of depression and anxiety attacks.

2. Processed food

Researchers in Britain have stated in the British Journal of Psychiatry that this type of food increases the risk of developing depression, because it contains harmful chemicals that promote the onset of cardiovascular disease and inflammation. Among them are meats, sausages, chocolate and sweet desserts.

3. Fried food

Stephanie Fulton of the University of Montreal Hospital Centre stated that foods rich in saturated fat help develop depressive behaviors, because of the chemical reactions that occur in the brain.

The University of Navarra confirms that this type of food causes the disorder, since, in excess, it increases the production of certain molecules like cytine, which can reduce the production of serotonin, responsible for generating a state of well-being.

4. Refined cereals

Consuming these foods as well as refined meals increases the likelihood of depression, according to a study by the University of London.

5. High-fat dairy

The universities of Navarra and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain, related the consumption of trans and saturated fats, which are found in dairy, with the development of depression.

6. Soft drinks

A study by the National Institutes of Health states that consuming more than one liter of these drinks a day causes depression and, if these are dietary, the odds increase.

7. Alcohol

Its prolonged abuse triggers depression because it interferes with nervous system receptors, but the mechanisms associated with this reaction are not yet determined, a study published in the Archives of General Psychiatry reports.

To live better, it is necessary to have a healthy diet, avoid foods with high fat content and refined sugars, exercise and take part in activities that bring you happiness.
